How many times have you seen the gear shift pattern on a floor shift knob askew? The most likely cause is that through years of use the knob has become overtightned, and will never, ever again line up properly.
Well, I have a solution to this problem. What I did was, after a little massaging by sanding, put a No. 2 lead pencil eraser in the hole of the gear shift knob. By doing so you will find that you may tighten the knob and have the gear shift pattern printed on it align with the shifter so that it looks correct and is readable!
I doubt this fix is in any way original, but it worked for me, so I thought I would pass it on.

I have a nylon locking nut under mine, and I tighten to a good point, then go backwards with the nut, it tightens up next to the knob, holds it in place, and it's adjustable.

That is a very good idea, Dave. Could also be accomplishd with a piece of urethane cut to fit in the bottom of the hole- but the pencil eraser is brilliant- free !

Scott:
All I know is, it came to me, I tried it and it worked just fine! If others can benefit from this rare and random thought, so much the better.
