Simplest way to adjust the valves
1. Establish where the #1 wire plug goes into the dist cap -mark the dist to show this position
2. Turn the engine by hand ( plugs out helps) so that the timing mark is aligned at "o"- remove the dist cap and see if the rotor poimts to your mark, if it does, you are at TDC firing stroke on # 1 -if it doesn't , turn the engine around again - rotor should point to #1 position on the cap and timing mark at 0
the following valves can be adjusted in this position - pay attention and don't lose track of where you are
#1 piston TDC firing; adjust #1 intake & exhaust, #3 intake, #5 exhaust
#4 exhaust, #6 intake
Then turn the engine 360 degrees counterclokwise until it comes to "0" again- now the #2 cylinder is at TDC firing stroke and the rest of the valves can be adjusted
#2 piston TDC firing; adjust #2 intake & exhaust, #4 intake, #6 exhaust
#3 exhaust, #5 intake
To adjust the valves , Take up all slack between the rocker and the pushrod then lash valve 1/4 to one & 1/2 turns.
Put the engine back together and start it up- it will tap like crazy until the lifters pump up- resist the urge to go in while it is runnng and mess with them. Also don' rev the engine up until the valves have quieted down.
If your lifters are functioning , and there is enough oil in the engne, they will quiet down- it may take 10 minutes - just chill out for a while , check the timing and dwell while you are waiting .
If they don't quiet down after 20 minutes then you may have a bent pushrod, bad lifter , or bad components such as the rocker arm, ball, or stud.
